Islamic University student Ulfat Ara Tinni has allegedly committed suicide being physically abused by her elder sister’s ex-husband, alleged her family members.
The incident took place at village Sheikhpara under Shailkupa upazila in Jhenidah district on Friday midnight.
Tinni was an Accounting (Hons) student at the university. She was the daughter of late freedom fighter Yusuf Ali, a resident of the village.
Mokhlesur, cousin of the deceased, said Tinni’s elder sister Minni married one Jamirul of the same village.
“But, Minni got separated from her husband over family feud. Her husband later pressed Tinni to bring her back to his house. He had been torturing Minni for not being agreed with his proposal for a long time,” he added.
Police said Jamirul, along with others, entered Tinni’s house at about 10.00pm on Thursday and vandalized the house. About two hours later, he again came and entered the house and tortured Tinni.
Minni alleged that her sister committed suicide 10 minutes after her ex-husband left the house. She was found hanging with a ceiling fan.
“It is planned murder. She might have committer some bad things with my sister and it leads her to death,” she added.
Shailakupa Circle Assistant Superintendent of Police Ariful Islam said the death of Tinni is mysterious. “Details of the death will be known after medical tests. We are closely observing all the matter,” he added.
The official further said the body was brought at home for burial after completion of autopsy at Kushtia Hospital.
